Though Pittsburgh's air quality has improved dramatically since the steel industry's heyday, problems remain. "The Air We Breathe," a May 7, 2013 conference sponsored by Allegheny General Hospital and the Breathe Project looked at the serious problems caused by high particulate air pollution, including high rates of asthma, cancer and adverse birth outcomes such as low-weight infants. The conference drew nationally-known speakers as well as local experts on Pittsburgh's air quality issues.
